Confession time…
I know it’s far too early to mention Christmas…Well…that’s what everyone keeps telling me.
Meanwhile, I’m already picturing twinkling fairy lights reflected on cobbled streets, the comforting smell of cinnamon drifting through crisp winter air and the difficult decision of whether I really need another handcrafted Christmas decoration to squeeze into my suitcase.
(Spoiler alert…I absolutely do.)
There’s something about a European Christmas market that no shopping centre or high street can ever recreate. Perhaps it’s the centuries-old squares glowing beneath thousands of lights. Maybe it’s the sound of carol singers echoing through medieval streets. Or maybe it’s simply that first warming sip of mulled wine after spending the afternoon wrapped up against the winter chill.
Whatever the reason, Christmas markets have become one of my favourite ways to experience Europe.
But here’s something I’ve learnt over the years. Not every Christmas market deserves a place on your festive wish list. Some will leave you utterly enchanted.
Others are so crowded you’ll spend more time apologising to strangers than browsing the stalls.
Some are perfect for romance.
Others are made for families.
A few are foodie heaven.
And one or two remain wonderfully under the radar, quietly stealing the show while everyone else heads somewhere else.

Let’s be honest, December can become a little…chaotic. Shopping lists. School plays. Work deadlines. Wrapping presents at midnight while wondering where you’ve hidden the sellotape. Sometimes the best way to enjoy Christmas is to escape all the stress for a few days and a festive city break could be just what you need.
It’s wandering without an agenda. It’s finding a tiny café because the smell of fresh pastries pulled you in. It’s discovering little family-run stalls where everything has been lovingly handmade, instead of mass-produced.
And the best part?
Most Christmas market breaks are only a short flight from the UK, making them ideal for a long weekend or a few festive days away before the big day arrives.
Which Christmas Market Is Right for You?

“Where’s the best Christmas market?”
For Romance
If you’re planning a festive escape with someone special, I’d be looking towards Vienna or Prague. Think horse-drawn carriages, grand architecture, cosy cafés and evenings that feel like scenes from a Christmas film.
For Families
Copenhagen and Berlin are fantastic choices. Both offer plenty to keep children entertained, from festive rides and sparkling lights to delicious sweet treats and family-friendly attractions.
For Food Lovers
Budapest and Strasbourg are impossible to ignore. Rich flavours, hearty local dishes and festive drinks are just as much a part of the experience as the markets themselves.
For Picture-Perfect Moments
Prague is breathtaking. Every corner looks as though it’s been designed for Christmas cards.
For Something a Little Different
Gdańsk often flies under the radar compared with Europe’s bigger names, yet it’s one of the most charming festive cities you’ll find. Fewer crowds, wonderful hospitality and fantastic value make it a real hidden gem.
Prague, Czech Republic
A Fairytale City That Somehow Becomes Even More Magical at Christmas

The first time you step into the Old Town Square during the festive season, you’ll probably stop walking altogether. Not because you’re tired. Because you’ll simply want to stand there and take it all in.
Towering Gothic spires frame a huge Christmas tree, wooden market stalls fill the square and the scent of roasted chestnuts, grilled sausages and sweet pastries drifts through the air.
It feels timeless.
One of my favourite things about Prague is that it offers so much more than the market itself.
Spend your mornings exploring the winding streets of the Old Town before crossing the famous Charles Bridge, then warm up with a hot chocolate in one of the city’s wonderfully cosy cafés before returning to the markets after dark, when thousands of lights transform the city into something truly magical.
Don’t leave Prague without trying…
- Trdelník, the famous chimney cake coated in cinnamon sugar.
- Traditional Czech sausages fresh from the grill.
- A warming cup of svařák, the Czech version of mulled wine.
My Verdict
You’ll enjoy a completely different side of Prague, with quieter streets, beautiful light for photographs and enough space to simply soak up the atmosphere before everyone else wakes up.
Vienna, Austria
Elegant, Sophisticated and Utterly Enchanting

If Prague feels like a fairytale…Vienna feels like Christmas wearing its smartest outfit. Everything here seems effortlessly elegant. The grand boulevards. The beautifully decorated palaces. The horse-drawn carriages clip-clopping past illuminated buildings. Even stopping for coffee somehow becomes an event.
The city’s famous Christmas markets are spread across several locations, each with its own personality, but the market in front of the magnificent Rathaus is the one that steals most hearts.
With beautifully decorated wooden chalets, artisan gifts, festive music and one of the most impressive backdrops you’ll find anywhere in Europe.
Then there’s the food.
Freshly baked biscuits.
Warm pretzels.
Roasted almonds.
Apfelstrudel.
If you’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or simply fancy treating yourselves to something special, Vienna is one destination I recommend time and time again.
It has that rare ability to make every moment feel just a little bit more magical.
My Verdict
Vienna has a habit of convincing people they absolutely need handcrafted decorations, artisan chocolates and beautiful Christmas gifts they never intended to buy.
Budapest, Hungary
A City That Knows How to Do Christmas… and Cake!

If someone told me I could only visit one Christmas market for the food, Budapest would be right up there at the top of my list.
This is the sort of city where every corner tempts you with something delicious. One minute you’re admiring handmade decorations, the next you’re following the irresistible smell of freshly baked chimney cakes, sizzling sausages and steaming bowls of goulash.
The main markets at Vörösmarty Square and St Stephen’s Basilica each have their own charm, but it’s the atmosphere that really stays with you. As darkness falls, thousands of fairy lights twinkle overhead while festive music fills the square, creating the kind of evening that makes you forget you’ve been on your feet all day.
And here’s my favourite suggestion…
Spend an afternoon relaxing in one of Budapest’s famous thermal baths before wrapping up warm and heading to the markets. Sitting in naturally heated water while the winter air swirls around you is one of those travel experiences you’ll never forget.
Don’t leave Budapest without trying…

Bigger, Bolder and Bursting with Christmas Spirit

Berlin doesn’t just have a Christmas market. It has dozens.
Every neighbourhood seems to have its own festive celebration, each with a completely different personality.
Fancy traditional wooden chalets selling handcrafted gifts? You’ll find them.
Want ice skating beneath sparkling lights? That’s here too.
Looking for gourmet street food, artisan chocolates and festive cocktails? Berlin has you covered.
One of the things I love most about Berlin is the variety. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with children, or even as a group of friends, there’s a market to suit everyone.
If you’ve got teenagers to entertain, this is one destination I’d happily recommend. There’s always something happening, and the city has an energy that’s infectious during the festive season.

Where Cosiness Becomes an Art Form

If you’ve ever heard the Danish word hygge, Copenhagen is where you’ll truly understand it.
It’s impossible to explain until you’ve experienced it. Think cosy cafés glowing with candlelight, blankets wrapped around outdoor seating, fairy lights reflected in canals and the comforting smell of cinnamon pastries drifting through the air.
The famous Tivoli Gardens transforms into one of Europe’s most enchanting Christmas experiences, with festive rides, beautifully decorated gardens and enough twinkling lights to make even the biggest Scrooge smile.
Families absolutely adore Copenhagen, but it’s equally perfect if you’re simply looking to slow down and enjoy the run-up to Christmas.

Strasbourg, France
The City That Calls Itself the Capital of Christmas
Expected Christmas Market dates: Late November to late December 2026.
Strasbourg doesn’t need to convince you it loves Christmas.
It proudly calls itself the Capital of Christmas, and after one evening wandering its beautifully decorated streets, it’s hard to argue.
Half-timbered houses glow beneath thousands of fairy lights while the enormous Christmas tree in Place Kléber becomes the centrepiece of the celebrations.
The Alsatian influence means the food is every bit as memorable as the markets themselves, with gingerbread, pretzels, local wines and festive specialities tempting you at every turn.
It’s elegant without feeling formal.
Traditional without feeling old-fashioned.
And wonderfully festive without trying too hard.
My Verdict
If you’ve always dreamed of visiting a traditional European Christmas market, Strasbourg should be high on your list.
Gdańsk, Poland
Europe’s Best Kept Christmas Secret

Now here’s the destination I really want to tell you about.
While many travellers automatically head for Prague or Vienna, Gdańsk quietly gets on with being absolutely charming.
Colourful merchant houses line the streets, festive music drifts through the market and the atmosphere feels wonderfully authentic.
It also offers fantastic value, making it perfect if you’re looking for a magical Christmas break without stretching the budget.
Sometimes the best travel memories come from places you weren’t expecting to love quite so much.

My Top Tips for Planning Your Christmas Market Escape
After helping clients plan countless festive getaways, here are a few tips I’d always share:
- Book early. The most popular Christmas market breaks are often snapped up months in advance.
- Travel light. You’ll almost certainly come home with more than you left with!
- Wrap up warm. Layers, comfortable boots, gloves and a hat will make all the difference.
- Stay at least three nights. Two nights always seem to disappear far too quickly.
- Combine destinations. If you can’t choose between Prague and Vienna, why not visit both? A twin-centre festive adventure is a wonderful way to experience two very different Christmas traditions in one trip.
