Elvis 50th Anniversary 2027: Why Now Is the Time to Experience Elvis' America
Fifty years after Elvis Presley's death, Memphis is preparing for a landmark anniversary. But if you're travelling all the way to Tennessee for Elvis, I wouldn't stop at Graceland. I'd turn it into a proper American adventure.
Fifty years. It doesn't seem possible, does it?
On 16 August 2027, it will be 50 years since Elvis Presley died at Graceland in Memphis. For Elvis fans, 2027 is set to be a very special year, with Elvis Week returning to Memphis for its 50th anniversary celebration.
But here's the thing. If you're going to travel all the way to Tennessee for Elvis, why stop at Graceland? I'd use Elvis as the starting point for a much bigger journey through Memphis, Mississippi and the musical South.
Before Graceland, start in Tupelo.
To understand Elvis, you need to start before the jumpsuits, the sold-out concerts and the famous mansion.
You need to start in Tupelo, Mississippi.
This is where Elvis Aaron Presley was born on 8 January 1935.
The Elvis Presley Birthplace complex gives visitors a glimpse into his early life, including the tiny two-room house where he was born, his childhood church, museum and memorial sites.
It's a very different experience from Graceland.
And that's exactly what makes it so interesting.
This is Elvis before the fame.
You can also visit Tupelo Hardware, where Elvis' mother Gladys bought him his first guitar.
It's one of those smaller details that helps turn an ordinary sightseeing trip into a journey through someone's story.
Graceland shows you the icon. Tupelo helps you understand where the story began.
Donna GilbertThen follow the King to Memphis.
From Tupelo, continue to Memphis, the city Elvis would eventually call home.
And this is where the Elvis experience really starts to come alive.
Graceland
Of course, there's Graceland.
The famous mansion remains the centrepiece of any Elvis pilgrimage, with tours taking visitors through the home Elvis bought in 1957 and where he lived until his death in 1977.
You'll see the famous interiors, including the Jungle Room, before reaching the Meditation Garden.
But don't rush it.
Graceland isn't a quick photo stop.
Allow time to explore the wider Elvis Presley's Memphis complex too.
Elvis Presley's Memphis
Located across the road from Graceland, Elvis Presley's Memphis brings together an enormous collection of exhibitions and experiences exploring Elvis' life and career.
There's Elvis memorabilia, cars, costumes and music, alongside restaurants, shops and immersive experiences.
For serious fans, there are also more specialist experiences available, depending on what is operating during your visit.
And then there's the option of staying at The Guest House at Graceland, just steps from the attraction itself.
For an Elvis-focused trip, it's a pretty hard location to beat.
Memphis isn't a one-attraction destination.
This is where I'd encourage travellers not to make the mistake of treating Memphis as somewhere you visit purely for Graceland.
It isn't.
Memphis is one of America's great music cities.
Spend time on Beale Street, listen to live music, visit Sun Studio and explore the city's blues, soul and rock 'n' roll heritage.
The city also offers attractions including the Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Memphis Music Hall of Fame and Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
And then there's the food.
Barbecue, Southern comfort food, soul food and plenty of local favourites.
You could easily spend several days in Memphis without running out of things to do.
The Elvis 50th Anniversary: when should you go?
If your priority is being in Memphis for the 50th anniversary itself, August 2027 is the obvious choice.
The annual Candlelight Vigil takes place on the evening of 15 August, with fans making the walk to Elvis' gravesite at Graceland ahead of the anniversary on 16 August.
The vigil is open to attendees and does not require a special pass or wristband.
This is not one I'd recommend leaving until the last minute.
Demand for accommodation around the 2027 anniversary celebrations is expected to be particularly strong. If being in Memphis for the anniversary itself matters to you, planning early gives us far more opportunity to get the overall trip right.
And you don't necessarily have to travel during Elvis Week to enjoy an Elvis holiday.
If you prefer more flexibility, you can build an Elvis-themed itinerary at another time of year and still experience the major Elvis attractions.
My favourite way to do it? Make it bigger.
If you're travelling all the way to the American South, I'd be tempted to turn the Elvis trip into a multi-centre holiday.
Here are some of the combinations I'd consider.
Memphis & Tupelo
Ideal for: Elvis fans and first-time visitors.
Start in Memphis, allow plenty of time for Graceland and then head into Mississippi to see where Elvis' story began.
Memphis & Nashville
Ideal for: Music lovers who want more than Elvis.
Two legendary music cities, taking you from blues, soul and rock 'n' roll to country music and Music Row.
Memphis & New Orleans
Ideal for: Music, food and culture.
Memphis gives you blues, soul and Elvis. New Orleans adds jazz, Creole and Cajun flavours and a completely different atmosphere.
Memphis, Tupelo & the Delta
Ideal for: Travellers who want to get beneath the surface.
Add the Mississippi Delta and places such as Clarksdale for a deeper journey through America's musical history.
Memphis → Tupelo → Mississippi Delta → New Orleans.
Now we're talking.
Start in Memphis and immerse yourself in Elvis.
Travel to Tupelo and discover where his story began.
Continue through the Mississippi Delta, exploring blues history and smaller towns along the way.
Then finish in New Orleans with jazz, food and that unmistakable Louisiana atmosphere.
It's longer, but it turns an Elvis anniversary trip into a genuine Southern USA adventure.
If you're going to cross the Atlantic for Elvis, I'd make the journey count.
Donna GilbertWhat else could you add?
That's the beauty of a tailor-made USA holiday.
You don't have to choose between Elvis and everything else.
Is 2027 the year to visit Memphis?
If Elvis is on your travel bucket list, there's a very obvious reason to consider 2027.
But you don't have to be an Elvis superfan to enjoy the journey.
Memphis is a destination in its own right.
It's music, food, history, culture and Southern hospitality.
Elvis is simply one of the most fascinating threads running through it.
And if you're going to do it, I'd make the journey count.
Rather than simply booking a flight, a hotel and a ticket for Graceland, build an itinerary that tells the story.
Tupelo to Memphis.
Memphis to the Mississippi Delta.
Memphis to Nashville.
Memphis to New Orleans.
Or perhaps something completely different.
That's where tailor-made travel comes into its own.
