Aruba: Discovering the Magic of the “One Happy Island” – My FAM Trip Experience
There are trips that you enjoy… and then there are trips that stay with you long after you’ve returned home. My recent FAM trip to Aruba, hosted by the Aruba Tourism Authority, was firmly in the latter category. From the moment we landed, warmly welcomed by our incredible host Amayra, I knew this island was going to be something special.
Aruba proudly carries the slogan “One Happy Island”, and after spending a few unforgettable days exploring its beaches, hotels, cuisine, and culture, I can confidently say, it lives up to every word.
Why Aruba Should Be on Every British Traveller’s Radar
Before diving into my experience, here are a few key reasons why Aruba is such an easy and appealing destination for UK travellers:
- Aruba is part of the Dutch Caribbean, offering a unique blend of European charm and Caribbean warmth
- It boasts 365 days of sunshine
- It sits outside the hurricane belt, making it a reliable year-round destination
- The US dollar is widely accepted, and ATMs are plentiful
- UK travellers don’t require a visa for short stays
- US-style plugs are used everywhere (my top tip: buy the US adapter, along with a UK multi plug)
- Tap water is among the cleanest and safest in the world
- You can easily reach Aruba via Amsterdam with KLM
A Glimpse into Aruba’s History
Aruba’s story is as rich and colourful as its landscapes. Originally inhabited by the Caquetío people of the Arawak tribe, the island later became part of the Spanish Empire in the 15th century.
In 1636, Aruba came under Dutch control, and it remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands today, something you’ll notice in its architecture, language, and culture.
Over time, Aruba evolved through gold mining and oil refining before becoming the thriving tourism destination it is today. Despite this growth, it has retained a strong sense of identity and warmth that makes visitors feel instantly welcome.
Where We Stayed: BluAruba – A Stylish Palm Beach Base
Our host hotel, BluAruba, was perfectly positioned in the Palm Beach area, the liveliest part of the island. This is where you’ll find the buzz, restaurants, bars, beach clubs, and a vibrant atmosphere both day and night.
BluAruba offers a modern, apartment-style concept, ideal for those wanting space, flexibility, and a contemporary base within easy reach of everything.
Exploring Aruba: Culture, Landscapes & Iconic Stops
Our island tour with Amayra was the perfect introduction to Aruba beyond its beaches.
We explored the colourful streets of San Nicolas, known for its vibrant murals and artistic energy, before heading to the calm, crystal-clear waters of Baby Beach.
We climbed the unique Casibari Rock Formations and finished at the iconic California Lighthouse, where the panoramic views showcased Aruba’s rugged and diverse landscape beautifully.
Unique Island Experiences
Alto Vista Winery – A Hidden Gem
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was our visit to Alto Vista Winery.
Guided by Newton, whose passion and storytelling brought the experience to life, and hosted by Hubery, our fantastic sommelier, this was far more than just a wine tasting. It was immersive, personal, and completely unexpected in a Caribbean setting.
The setting itself is beautiful and the experience felt authentic and thoughtfully curated. It’s a brilliant addition if you’re looking for something different in Aruba.
Aruba Aloe Factory & Museum – A True Taste of Local Heritage
Another highlight was our visit to the Aruba Aloe Factory & Museum, one of the island’s oldest and most fascinating industries.
Here, we learned about Aruba’s long history of aloe cultivation, dating back over a century. Seeing the production process first-hand, from plant to finished product, gave a real appreciation for the quality and heritage behind the brand.
It’s a great cultural experience and a perfect stop for those wanting to connect with Aruba beyond the beaches.
